![]() ![]() It definitely doesn't seem as easy as the initial WHS setup was, but I already have the hardware and it's cheaper than buying an empty NAS enclosure. Now to set this thing up properly so I have a working NAS again. FreeNAS booted this time and I was able to access the web GUI from a remote machine! I powered off, ejected the system drive, and then powered on again.Ĩ. If I left all four HD's in their trays, the ex490 booted WHS, which isn't, of course, what I want it to do.ħ. I moved the stick to the bottom rear USB port on the ex490.Ħ. I turned on the network interface using the CLI and saved the settings.ĥ. I then took that USB stick and plugged it into a relatively recent windows laptop and booted off the USB.Ĥ. Then, using my Mac and Parallels, I booted off the ISO and had it install to a small USB stick.ģ. I downloaded the FreeNAS installer ISO.Ģ. I have had success booting FreeNAS 8.0.3 on my ex490!ġ. Otherwise, figure out which hard drive is drive 0.I already posted much of this in another thread, but I figure that someone else might find this here and find it useful: Will it boot from USB? Starts, so it would just be a matter of figuring out what IP address it got from DHCP. The company website appears to be empty now. At one point, there was a board that added both VGA and serial ports. ![]() I guess I should have dumbed down my questions and worded it this way: Does anyone have a URL or document detailing installations of FreeBSD in the 'unique or challenging' environment of a HP Home MediaSmart server. I have installed FreeBSD before so I think I am good there. I have also read that you have to temporarily wire a jumper or two together to get the thing to come up in BIOS mode. I'm sorry, for what might have seen like a dumb post, but I asked those questions because (a) the server does not have a video card output connector on it, but I have read you can fabricate a cable and solder it to leads on the board, and (b) the server does not have a DVD drive to read a disc to install from. To me, it is more of an experiment than a real need although, I expect to improve certain processes by doing this. In a previous post, I wrote about my plans to install Windows 8 in a HP MediaSmart server that I purchased a couple of years ago.I also explained how this machine has served me well and how there is no real reason to do this “upgrade” if you own one. ![]()
